Official WCC 1886–1946


      • From 1886 onwards the Championship becomes official but there wasn't' any organization to care about it. If one player thought that he was strong enough to win then he had to collect an amount of money in order to challenge the World Chess Champion.

Championship Cycle 1946–1948

      • After Alexander Alekhine's sudden death we don't have a World Chess Champion for 2 years, because no one could challenge him in a match. Then the best players of that time created a tournament in order to select the next Champion.

FIDE 1948-1993


      • FIDE is the World Chess Federation that created on the 20th of July 1924 in Paris. One of her duties is to create the World Chess Championship.

The separation 1993-2006


      • In 1993 Nigel Short manages to win Karpov and his road to the World Chess Championship match opened. However, before the start of the match with Kasparov, both players complain of corruption and a lack of professionalism within FIDE. Thus, they created their own organization; competitive to FIDE, Professional Chess Association (PCA). The main goal of PCA was to organize the World Chess Championships. During this period we have two different championships ongoing.

      • In 1993, with Short, and 1995, with Anand, it manages to create two successful Championship circles and the matches. Nonetheless, in 1996 loses the main sponsor, Intel, because Kasparov agreed to play a match with the supercomputer Deep Blue. It had been created by IBM, a competitive company. Kasparov never manages to create another World Chess Championship circle and finally he defeated in 2000 by Kramnik.

FIDE 2006- Present


    • FIDE 2006- Έως τώρα
    • After Kasparov's absence from the World Championship FIDE and Kramnik made a new attempt to unite the Championships. In 2006 took place the episodic match Kramnik-Topalov. Kramnik manages to win it but he lost his title in 2007 by Anand. Then Anand lost the title from Carlsen in 2013.
